When Brendan Hamill was sent off just before half-time on Thursday, it looked like a long 45 minutes for Western United.With the game poised at 1-1, the Green & Black faced a barrage of attacks from Wellington in the second half. Still, they managed to fend off the Nix and hold on to claim a precious point.Earlier in the season, Rudan’s men probably would have crumbled after going down to ten men. But they seem to have developed a newfound resilience of late.The visit of struggling Newcastle provides United with the ideal opportunity to seal a fifth win in eight outings.
If veteran striker Besart Berisha continues to add to his impressive tally of eight goals and three assists this season, Western should be able to sneak into the top six and cement a Finals Series berth.
I guess the Jets can take confidence that they have drawn their previous two matches, especially when you consider that they suffered seven straight defeats before that.However, there is no hiding from the fact that Newcastle is enduring a season to forget.Looking at the bigger picture, Deans’ men have only managed to win three of their 18 A-League games this term. Worse still, they have scored just 16 goals along the way.The Jets finally ended their club-record losing streak against Perth last week – holding the Glory to a 1-1 draw. Last weekend, they managed to hold Macarthur to a 2-2 draw – despite seeing 34% possession and facing 17 shots.Having gone nine matches without a victory, Newcastle will be desperate to return to winning ways. But that will likely be easier said than done against in-form Western United.
